Phillip Floyd joined SHDR in 2001, bringing with him more than 25 years of experience in the financial services industry. As Director of SHDR, Phillip provides leadership and direction to the practice. Prior to joining SHDR, Phillip led First Charter's Trust Division and First Charter Brokerage Services and managed the Trust & Capital Management Group of Southern National.
Phillip received a Bachelor of Business Administration in trust management and a Master of Business Administration from Campbell University. He also holds a Master of Organizational Leadership and Management from the University of North Carolina–Pembroke. Phillip is a graduate of the National Graduate Trust School sponsored by the American Bankers Association and Northwestern University and also graduated with a major in trust management from the School for Bank Administration sponsored by the Bank Administration Institute and the University of Wisconsin.
He holds the following designations: Certified Financial Services CounselorTM, Certified Trust and Financial AdvisorTM, Chartered Mutual Fund Counselor, and Accredited Investment FiduciaryTM. He also holds NASD Series 7, 24, 63 and 65 securities licenses, and a North Carolina Life and Health insurance license.

Steven Bull is Senior Vice President and consulting actuary for SHDR and is responsible for leading the SHDR Actuarial Services division. Steven began consulting on retirement benefits including qualified and nonqualified retirement plans in 1983 and came to SHDR from Watson & Wyatt in 1991. Today, he focuses on designing and administering nonqualified retirement plans used as executive compensation and retention tools.
Steve also consults in the areas of pension and retiree medical benefits and performs actuarial valuations and special studies, helping clients to provide cost-effective employee benefits that are in compliance with government legislation.
Steve received a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and actuarial science from the University of Michigan. He holds the following designations: American Society of Pension Actuaries, Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, Fellow of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries, and Enrolled Actuary.

Steven Honeycutt is Senior Vice President providing sales and marketing for Flexible Benefit products. He became part of the SHDR team in 2001 as department manager and consultant for our Benefit Communications division. Steve has over 25 years experience in the benefit administration and financial services industries and prior to joining SHDR, spent over 20 years in the corporate offices of Hardee's Food Systems.
Steven received a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina–Greensboro, and attended North Carolina State University and Kansas State University, where he received a graduate degree in food science and technology. He is also a graduate of the Executive Management School at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill.
Steven is a member of the National Association of Health Underwriters, State and Local Government Benefits Association and the Employers Council on Flexible Compensation. He holds NASD Series 6, 23, 63 and 65 securities licenses, as well as North Carolina Life and Health and Medicare Supplement / Long-Term Care insurance licenses.

Karen Bender is the Vice President and department head for our Flexible Benefits division. Karen has more than 13 years experience in management, consulting and project management of multi-service benefit administration teams. Prior to joining Stanley & Hunt, she was the Flexible Benefits Operations Manager at Aon Consulting in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and served for 4 years as the Human Resources Manager for a local Winston-Salem firm.
Karen has extensive experience related to flexible benefit plan design and ongoing plan administration. She has been recognized for being highly effective in spearheading and implementing technology-based solutions to varied operations management and analytical issues.
Karen has served on several national task forces throughout her career and continues to stay abreast of industry changes through membership in the Employers Council on Flexible Benefits and the Employee Benefits Institute of America and by serving as part of the Evolution Benefits' Partner Advisory Group.

Paul Jalazo is the Senior Vice President and department head for our Executive Compensation division. He also supervises a team that provides technical support to our staff, our clients and their professional advisors. Paul joined SHDR in 1990 as department head of Technical Services, bringing with him 30 year's consulting experience related to qualified, nonqualified and welfare benefit plans. During those years, Paul also installed and administered several hundred employee stock ownership plans. He worked with companies representing a range of industries and sizes ― from 25 to several hundred thousand employees, including C corporations and S corporations.
Paul received a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in speech behavior from Pennsylvania State University. He then went on to earn a Doctor of Law from Case Western Reserve University and a Master of Laws in taxation from Emory University.
While working in Oklahoma and Texas, Paul was a member of the Employee Benefits Advisory Council for the Dallas Key District of the Internal Revenue Service.

Paula Smith is Vice President providing sales and marketing for Flexible Benefit products. She served as department manager and consultant for our Benefit Communications division from 2004 through 2010. Before joining SHDR in 2004, Paula served as Benefits Administration Manager for our parent company BB&T. Paula's previous experience includes 23 years in human resource administration for both large and small companies.
Paula has a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Appalachian State University and holds the following designation: Professional in Human Resources from the Human Resource Certification Institute.

Jonas Mullins is President & Chief Compliance Officer of SHDR Investment Advisors Inc., a subsidiary of our parent company BB&T Corporation. Jay joined SHDR in 1999, and in 2006, was named President of SHDR IA. Previously, Jay worked with companies including Friatec AG, Schmid & Kahlert GmbH, United Parcel Service and Exxon. Today, Jay uses the insight he's gained from 27 years of business experience to perform general management and oversight of the SHDR IA division.
Jay received a Bachelor of Business Administration in international business from the University of Texas, and a Master of Business Administration from the American Graduate School of International Management.
Jay is an Accredited Investment FiduciaryTM and holds NASD Series 7, 63, and 65 securities licenses.

Brian Patterson is a Senior Vice President with Stanley, Hunt, DuPree & Rhine (SHDR), a division of BB&T Retirement and Institutional Services. He is the Practice Leader and Administrative Manager for Actuarial Services. Brian has over 16 years of experience in actuarial consulting and defined benefits administration, all with SHDR.
Brian is a graduate of Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematical Economics. He also earned his Masters of Business Administration in 2010 from the Wake Forest University Schools of Business, where he received the Leadership Award for outstanding academic and leadership performance.
Brian is currently certified with the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries (ASPPA) as a Qualified Pension Administrator (QPA) and Qualified 401(k) Administrator (QKA). Brian oversees the delivery of client services; daily operations including actuarial and pension administration systems; new business development; strategic planning; product development; regulatory and compliance issues; and quality control.

Linda Williams is Senior Vice President and Administrative Officer for SHDR. Linda became part of the SHDR management team in 2002 and in her current position provides project leadership and oversight of the separate practices within SHDR.
Linda has 30 year's experience in finance and administration, including 17 years as an assistant controller for Belk department stores and 3 years as the Chief Operating Officer and Finance Officer for Southeastern Trust Company.
Linda earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Bob Jones University and has furthered her education and training through executive management programs throughout her career.
