About SHDR-IA

About Us

Our History

SHDR Investment Advisers, Inc. is a Carolina-based investment consulting firm founded in 1992 as Retirement Plan Securities, Inc., an SEC-registered investment adviser. In its beginnings, the firm served the two most basic needs of our record-keeping clients: objective investment advice and assistance in managing fiduciary risk.

In the 1990s, our practice grew to include institutional clients of many types including, qualified and nonqualified retirement plans, municipalities, nonprofits and other portfolios in diverse market segments. In 2000, Retirement Plan Securities was acquired by Wachovia Corporation.

Following the First Union/Wachovia merger, the firm was purchased in 2002 by BB&T Corporation, one of America's leading financial institutions. The firm, renamed SHDR Investment Advisers (SHDR-IA), remains a wholly owned subsidiary of BB&T Corporation and now serves clients throughout the Southeast.
